The Chesapeake Chorale

Laud to the Nativity

Open your holiday season with the Chesapeake Chorale in a performance of the charming Laud to the Nativity by Ottorino Respighi, a rarely performed Christmastide gem. With elegant vocal lines and music reminiscent of shepherds' pipes, Respighi retells the story of the nativity, based on St. Luke's account of an angel who appears to simple shepherds with good news, the birth of the Christ Child.

Featuring guest soloists
Hilary Dean, soprano
Leneida Crawford, mezzo soprano
Jorge D. Alzadon, tenor

The Chorale's popular concert will, as always, feature both traditional carols and new works for the holidays. These include Cary Ratcliff's arrangement of Angels We Have Heard On High and the spirited Neighbors, On This Frosty Tide, inspired by the Kenneth Grahame children's classic, The Wind in the Willows.

The Chorale's holiday concert, an annual Bowie tradition, will usher in the season in memorable fashion!

Brahms ~ Ein deutsches Requiem

One of the most beloved choral works of all time, Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) by Johannes Brahms is the culmination of the Chorale's 31st season. The piece will be performed in a special arrangement by the composer for Chorus, Soloists and
Piano Four-Hands.

Featuring guest soloists
Lisa Eden, soprano
Michael Nansel, baritone

Steeped in the Protestant tradition, Brahms turned to Martin Luther's translation of the Bible for his text, and Ein deutsches Requiem stands apart from the traditional Roman Catholic mass. Absent are depictions of judgment and eternal damnation; rather, Brahms' interpretation is a spirit-filled work offering consolation for those left behind. Brahms had begun thinking about a memorial work soon after the death of his friend, Robert Schumann. Upon the death of his mother, he began in earnest on the Requiem. In working through his personal grief, Brahms called on the theology of his Protestant upbringing to create a work of great depth and reassuring comfort.
