On Saturday, June 12, 2010, the Chesapeake Chorale presented "Peace Pacem" at the St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, Bowie, Maryland. The concert music was chosen for its relation to and as an expression of the theme of peace.
Selections were:
Island in Space by Kirke Mechem, sung a cappella.
Rejoice in the Lamb, a festival cantata in
four parts, is Benjamin Britten's classic setting of the"Jubilate Agno," written by mystic eighteenth-century English poet
Christopher Smart.
Dona Nobis Pacem by Vaughn Williams was conceived as a
warning against the gathering clouds of war
hovering over 1930s Europe and is his
ultimate choral expression, with the calming
Latin text of the Agnus Dei set against
disturbing and provocative poetry
by Walt Whitman and John Bright.
