The Chesapeake Chorale presents“Side by Side with Sondheim”
The Chorale presents an evening of music by one of the masters of American musical theater. Stephen Sondheim began his career as a protégé of Oscar Hammerstein II and as a lyricist for Leonard Bernstein (West Side Story, Candide), but soon struck out on his own with a breathtaking series of Broadway shows: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Follies, Company, A Little Night Music, Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, and Sunday in the Park with George. Join us for an enchanting evening of music from this true American genius, with featured selections from his musicals by the Chorale and in solos by members of the Chorale. But you better get your tickets early, because “Another Hundred People Just Got Off of the Train”! And as you head into the performance, keep a look out for beans…“They May Be Magic. ” Saturday, March 16th at 7:30 pm & Sunday, March 17th at 3 pm Christian Community Presbyterian Church 3120 Belair Drive Bowie, MD 20715 |
"A Ceremony of Carols"
From the quiet solitude of Away in a Manger, arranged by Ola Gjeilo, to Craig Courtney’s How Great Our Joy, with its festive four-hands piano accompaniment, the Chesapeake Chorale celebrated the season in carols! The main feature of this year’s annual holiday tradition was a performance of Benjamin Britten’s celebrated suite A Ceremony of Carols for chorus and harp.
In this beloved setting of Middle English Christmas texts, composed in 1942, Britten draws inspiration from a long tradition of native English church music. Although the music is decidedly twentieth century, Britten was careful to maintain the character of the medieval poetry.
