The Chesapeake Chorale presents
“Beethoven at 250”

The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, arguably the greatest composer in history. The Chesapeake Chorale celebrates the landmark occasion with a performance of Beethoven’s Mass in C Major.

Composed in the summer of 1807 on a commission from Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy, Haydn’s former employer, the Mass in C was written for the name day celebration of Nikolaus’ wife, Maria Josepha.

No composer before or since has had as profound and lasting an effect on classical music as has Beethoven.  He changed the musical landscape and redefined musical expression.  The Mass in C, his first foray into sacred choral music, stretches the contemporary boundaries of choral artistry and bears his idiomatic musical syntax.

The performance will run approx. 1 hour with no intermission.
